Pacific Riding For Developing Abilities

Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities (PRDA) in Langley, has been around since 1973. It is the largest therapeutic horseback riding and equestrian facility in British Columbia. PRDA sits on a beautiful 15 acre property directly across from Campbell Valley Park. We have the privilege of using the park when the weather cooperates! PRDA offers recreational and competitive therapeutic riding lessons and equestrian activities to children and adults. Ages of riders range from 3 to 99! We rely on the dedication of over 150 volunteers to work with over 170 riders each week.

History of Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Therapeutic horseback riding began after World War II. Veterans returning home discovered that horses provided an excellent form of therapy and exercise. Since then, therapeutic riding has become one of the most effective and valuable therapies. Above all, horses’have kind natures and great versatility. Our PRDA horses teach people with all types of diagnoses including: autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. Many have developmental delay, spinal cord injuries and mental health challenges. Horses are prey animals and so, find strength in their herd. Because of this, it makes them ideal partners for someone struggling with trauma, loss, or personal growth.

Therapeutic Benefits

The benefits of riding a horse are limitless. But the most common are: increased balance, core strength and coordination. Normalization of muscle tone and improved joint mobility are experienced by riders. Decreased spasticity, increased range of motion and proprioception as well as  improvements in walking gait and overall mobility. Increased focus, concentration and improved decision-making skills. As a result riders improve understanding, turn-taking and sharing. They enjoy increased self-confidence, respect and compassion for people and animals.

Consequently, many of our riders who start out riding as a form of therapy, have it turn into a passion and lifelong love of horseback riding. We truly have the full range of riders here at PRDA. Everything from our littlest riders with a leader and two sidewalkers, to independent riders that own their own horses and compete on a provincial level!

Our Horses, Volunteers and Donors

PRDA is proud of who we are and what we do. Our horses are second to none because they are the true therapists. Our volunteers and donors are the heart of our program. Without them we could not operate on a year-round basis. Therapeutic horseback riding is growing in recognition. Most noteworthy, is its value among industry professionals. This includes: physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, physicians, chiropractors, teachers and special education assistants, for instance.
